Diana Johnson MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Office Minister, responding to reports that some terrorist suspects could be released from restrictions within days, said:
“It is incredible that as a result of Theresa May’s actions terrorist suspects still considered dangerous by the Home Secretary will have all checks and restrictions removed in three weeks’ time.
“The Home Secretary was repeatedly warned that if she moved to the weaker TPIMs regime for terrorist suspects then she would be lifting restrictions on a group of terror suspects all at once.
“No matter how dangerous the Government or courts believe these men to be, there is nothing they can do about it - thanks to Theresa May’s decision to put an arbitrary limit of 2 years on a TPIM with no consideration for the danger. Only a few months ago, the Home Secretary was arguing in court that some of these men were so dangerous that the restrictions were needed. Yet now she is powerless to prevent them walking the streets without restriction, thanks to her own policy decisions.
“The Home Secretary’s job is to protect the public, but on this issue she has been irresponsible and refused to listen to warnings.
“Theresa May has already lost two terror suspects under the weaker TPIMs regime - they just ran off and no one has seen them since.
“She needs to explain urgently what she plans to do about each of the remaining terror suspects when their TPIMs end to keep the public safe.”
