One year on from the horsemeat scandal it is worrying that not all the lessons appear to have been learnt - Maria Eagle

Maria Eagle MP, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, speaking ahead of the first anniversary of the horsemeat scandal, said:

“One year on from the horsemeat scandal it is worrying that not all the lessons appear to have been learned.

“David Cameron approved changes after the election that weakened consumer protection, yet these remain in place despite the clear recommendation of the Elliott review.

“The decision to fragment the Food Standards Agency, splitting responsibility for food safety and authenticity, was misguided and should immediately be reversed to reduce the risk of a further scandal.”
