This report is more evidence of complacency, inefficiency and a lack of transparency in the Ministry of Defence under David Cameron- Coaker

Vernon Coaker MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, commenting on the Defence Committee’s report on the Ministry of Defence Annual Report and Accounts 2012-2013, said:

“This report is more evidence of complacency, inefficiency and a lack of transparency in the Ministry of Defence under David Cameron.

“There is strong criticism of the financial information provided by the Government, despite the MoD paying almost £2m in fees to external accountants during the last financial year.

“The report identifies a worrying lack of clarity around roles and responsibilities at senior levels. It’s clear from what has gone on in the last number of weeks that there is a crisis of competence at the heart of the MoD. Millions of pounds are being wasted, major projects are being abandoned and the Government is failing to get its reforms to procurement and the Armed Forces off the ground.

“There is a worrying shortfall in the required levels of trained personnel to fulfil critical operational requirements. These Pinch Points include some of the most specialist jobs in areas of engineering, technical and medical expertise. They are vital roles needed to support our Armed Forces and keep Britain safe and secure.

“Philip Hammond needs to ensure that this report’s key recommendations are implemented.”
