Minimum wage undercutting - time Tories and Lib Dems backed changes - David Hanson

David Hanson MP, Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister, commenting on reports that some immigrant labourers are being paid significantly below the minimum wage, said:

“This is disgraceful exploitation of immigration by employers which undercuts local workers and responsible companies. Yet it is even more disgraceful that the Government is failing to act. It’s time the Tories and Liberal Democrats backed our amendments to the Immigration Bill on Thursday, to crack down on this kind of exploitation and make the system fair.

“Despite pressure from Labour, ministers are continuing to block any labour market reforms. We want proper enforcement of the minimum wage, and action to put a stop to the abuse of workers by gang masters highlighted in this investigation and to stop recruitment agencies only recruiting from abroad. These measures are being opposed by Theresa May and she needs to back them instead.

“Most migrants come to the UK to work, so labour market reforms are desperately needed or else the migrant, the local worker and the responsible business will be forced into a race to the bottom with everyone losing out. It’s time the Government recognised this and, instead of repeating platitudes from the business secretary, backed Labour’s reforms.”
