Ed Miliband and Gloria De Piero statement ahead of the first same sex marriages tomorrow

Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party said:

“I want to send all my congratulations and best wishes to all of those who will be getting married over the next few weeks and months.

“This is an incredibly happy time for so many gay couples and lesbian couples who will be getting married but it is also a proud time for our country as well, recognising equal marriage in law.

“I’m proud of the part that Labour MPs played in this cross-party effort to put equal marriage on the statute book.

“There are many more strides we’ve got to take but this is an important moment. Most of all I want to congratulate all the campaigners who made it possible, on this important victory and this incredibly proud moment for Britain.”

Gloria De Piero MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities said:

“Today, as loving couples in England and Wales prepare to get married, as a country we celebrate a historic step towards equality.

“Over the last 15 years we have seen a scale and pace of progress few deemed possible, and I’m proud of the role Labour has played alongside campaigners to drive forward this change.

“Of course equality in law is not enough, and as a Party we will continue to challenge stigma and prejudice wherever we find it, but today we share in the joy of all those couples getting married.”
