Harriet Harman MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, responding to Jeremy Browne calling for a cut in the top rate of tax, said:

“Jeremy Browne has reinforced the point that the Lib Dems are not a brake on the Tories – in fact he calls for them to go further and be an accelerator on Tory policies. Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems have already voted with the Tories to give millionaires a tax cut worth an average of £100,000.  Now, as ordinary families continue to face a cost-of-living crisis, this Lib Dem is calling for the top rate of tax to be slashed yet again.      

“Whatever the Lib Dems try to claim, the truth is that Nick Clegg and his Party have broken their promises and backed the Tories all the way and hardworking people are paying the price. They are not a constraint on the Tories – they are their willing helpers.‪”
