Ivan Lewis MP comment on the State Visit of Irish President Michael Higgins

Ivan Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, commenting on the State Visit of Irish President, Michael Higgins, said:

“The visit by Irish President Michael Higgins reflects the transformation in the relationship between the UK and Ireland. While once the relationship was strained by suspicion, it has been transformed by the Northern Ireland peace process into a strong partnership between close neighbours.

“The partnership between the UK and Ireland is important for peace and stability in Northern Ireland but it is also vital for an economic recovery in both countries which leads to new jobs and an improved standard of living for working people.

“The visit provides an opportunity to celebrate the warm friendship which now exists across our islands and to recognise the substantial contribution made by the Irish Diaspora to communities across the UK.

“While considerable progress has been made in Northern Ireland over the past 15 years, peace and stability is hard earned and remains fragile. Both governments should seize this opportunity to reiterate their commitment to a joint approach which encourages Northern Ireland’s political leaders to make the tough but necessary compromises that are essential to reconciliation and progress towards a shared future.”
