New figures uncovered by Labour have revealed that millions of households will miss out on promised savings to their energy bills, after the Government failed to ensure that cuts to green levies were passed on to customers. In response to Labour’s price freeze David Cameron repeatedly claimed consumers’ bills would fall by £50 following the changes to green levies. However, four of the big six energy companies have failed to pass on the full savings to all of their customers and in total 3.7 million customers are estimated to miss out on over £140 million of savings.
Caroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said:
“There’s a cost-of-living crisis in Britain, but David Cameron always stands up for the privileged few. The energy companies were meant to cut everyone’s bills in return for Government changes to green levies. Instead, the energy companies have been allowed to pocket the savings and millions of customers won’t see the benefit. Yet again David Cameron has let the energy companies off the hook.
“Worst of all, even for people who did get the cuts to green levies passed on, the average energy bill is still £60 higher this year compared to last year. This shows why nothing less than a price freeze and action to reset the market to stop the energy companies overcharging again in the future will do.”
