Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to reports that two more inmates have gone on the run after absconding from an open prison, said: “Another day and another set of prisoners have gone missing on David Cameron’s watch. There are now serious questions for the Prime Minister to answer. “You really could not make up the sheer incompetence of this Government. Public safety is being put at risk because of this Government’s failings. Seven prisoners have absconded in three weeks, some of them very dangerous.  "Chris Grayling has failed to keep them behind bars or say if those who’ve absconded would have been in open prisons under his new regime. Rather than chasing headlines, he needs to start behaving like a Justice Secretary and show signs that he is up to the job.   “This makes the need for an independent inquiry into what’s happened all the more urgent. David Cameron needs to also explain why Chris Grayling still has his confidence to do the job and take responsibility for this shambles.” Ends
