Commenting on reports that David Cameron has threatened Britain’s continued membership of the EU if Jean-Claude Juncker becomes European Commission chief, Labour’s Shadow Europe Minister, Gareth Thomas MP:
“Sadly these reports suggest just how diminished David Cameron’s influence now is in European capitals, after years of burning bridges rather than building alliances.
“True to form, he’s playing to the gallery of the Eurosceptic backbenchers in his own party, and making threats when instead he should be forging alliances.
“But what he doesn’t seem to understand is that his eurosceptic MPs won’t give in until he gives up, and takes Britain out of the EU altogether.
“Since his Bloomberg speech David Cameron has failed to set out what changes he wants to see or to build the necessary alliances across Europe in order to deliver reform.
“Labour wants to see real reform in Europe to make the EU work better for Britain, and Douglas Alexander has now called on David Cameron to follow Labour’s lead and set out his specific reform proposals.”
