LGA report - Labour will introduce a new Director of School Standards in every local area - Tristram Hunt

Tristram Hunt MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, responding to the call by the LGA on school intervention powers, said:

“This Tory-led Government is failing to deliver high standards for all children, and is focusing instead on internal rows. Recent events in Birmingham reveal that David Cameron and Michael Gove’s school system is exposed to falling standards and undue influence. By refusing to address the lack of local oversight in our schools system, they are continuing to demonstrate shocking complacency.

“We need a system of real local oversight, so all schools are properly held to account and if problems arise they are spotted and acted upon quickly. That’s why Labour will introduce a new Director of School Standards in every local area, independent of the local authority and with a remit to oversee, support and challenge all schools to deliver a high standard, broad education. That is how we will guarantee schools deliver the quality of education parents want to see.”
