Crucial we make it very clear that carrying a knife is unacceptable - Sadiq Khan

Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting ahead of the votes on amendments to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill on knife crime tomorrow, said:

“We need to do more to stop the devastation caused by the scourge of knife crime. That’s why it’s crucial we make it very clear that carrying a knife is unacceptable, even more so for those who repeatedly commit knife crime. Sentencing sends out a strong signal and that’s why we’re supporting these changes to the law.

"But we do a huge disservice to the victims of knife crime if we give the impression that this alone will solve the problem. Much more needs to be done to ensure people are made aware of the consequences of carrying a knife and to divert people away from this destructive lifestyle. And our focus must be on preventing people carrying a knife in the first place and tackling gang culture. Education is key to this, as is working closely with families and youth services.”
