IFS Report shows Labour raised schools standards: but David Cameron and Michael Gove are taking us backwards says Tristram Hunt
Responding to the IFS report, commissioned by the Social Mobility Commission, on the educational attainment of disadvantaged pupils, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt MP said:
“We welcome this report that clearly shows how the last Labour Government raised standards in our schools, bringing high aspirations and improved life chances to millions of children in inner cities like London and Manchester. Labour’s priority will be to build on and spread this success across the country.
“The progress Labour made is being undermined by this Government, as last year around half of local authorities reported a rise in the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and their peers.“
"By watering down teaching standards - changing the rules to allow unqualified teachers into our classrooms on a permanent basis - David Cameron and Michael Gove are taking us backwards. Labour will ensure that all teachers have or are working toward qualified teacher status”.
