Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, said:

“We all want to see a President of the European Commission who makes the EU work better for Britain. That’s why this week will be a crucial test of the Prime Minister’s influence with our allies to secure the best deal for Britain and Europe.                                                         

“Calling for a vote in the EU Council is no substitute for securing support for the right candidate amongst other EU leaders, and that is where David Cameron’s efforts should be focused.  

“What matters is Britain’s influence and interests, much more than David Cameron’s bluster and belligerence. So it’s time for him to deliver leadership, and not simply offer excuses.”
