Response to the Parade Commission ruling- Lewis

Ivan Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, commenting on today’s ruling by the Parade’s Commission, said:

“Today’s decision by the independent Parades Commission was always going to be controversial and unpopular with one or other section of the community. What is important now is that political and community leaders urge a peaceful and measured response with unequivocal respect for the rule of law.

"The marching season is an important time in Northern Ireland when people rightly have the opportunity to celebrate their heritage and identity. It is essential everything possible is done to ensure this happens free from violence and disorder.

"Ultimately, the only way to minimise tension and move forward on a shared future for Northern Ireland requires political agreement on Parades and new mechanisms to deal with the past. That is why notwithstanding current tensions it is very disappointing that the DUP and UUP have withdrawn from the all-party talks. It is essential that these talks reconvene as soon as possible.”
