Cameron must now change his approach to Europe - Douglas Alexander
Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, said:   “The UK’s last European Commissioners both held major portfolios central to Britain’s national interests. So David Cameron knows that heading into this EU summit, he must deliver a senior Commission portfolio for the UK to help secure the reforms that Britain wants and that Europe needs.   “Britain can’t afford for David Cameron’s humiliation over Jean-Claude Juncker to become a foretaste of his failure to deliver on other promised EU priorities in the future.   “Europe needs to change, but recent negotiations with our EU allies have shown that the Prime Minister is prone to making unforced and unnecessary errors which weaken Britain’s influence.   “But despite David Cameron’s recent blunders in Brussels there is still a coalition of countries that would unite around reform.   “So David Cameron must now change his approach to Europe, and seize this window of opportunity to ensure his nominee for the UK’s next EU Commissioner, Lord Hill, secures a major economic portfolio to focus the EU on growth and jobs in the months ahead.”
