Rt Hon Jim Murphy MP, Shadow International Development Secretary, on World Humanitarian Day, said:
“Our generation doesn’t suffer a single global conflict taking the lives of millions but instead we now have multiple conflicts across the world, characterised by the targeting of innocent civilians, displacement of countless families, and the fostering of instability across entire regions.
“Today is a moment for governments who have pledged money for humanitarian aid in Syria to deliver. Empty promises motivated by good intentions help no-one. The current failure of some Governments to deliver is having a dreadful impact in the region.
”‘Reports have shown that it’s now more dangerous than ever to be an aid worker and recent tragic events highlight the daily dangers faced by the aid workers helping those in desperate need. On World Humanitarian Day, the international community must ensure those currently working in Northern Iraq supplying vital aid to displaced people are protected and given the opportunity to do their work.“
