Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, responding to the ceasefire deal between Ukraine and Russia, said:
“European cooperation enshrined within solid transatlantic bonds remains a cornerstone of our continent’s peace and prosperity in an increasingly insecure and volatile world.
“The NATO summit has taken significant steps forward in agreeing coordinated action that can help ensure that the alliance remains effective in responding to new and emerging threats that shape the international security landscape.
“The immediate priority for NATO now is to help ensure that all parties uphold the newly agreed ceasefire in Ukraine. The deal signed between Ukraine and Russia is a welcome step towards stability at a time of significant peril. Russia’s belligerence in the face of international laws and norms cannot be tolerated by the international community.
“Coordinated EU and US action to put pressure on President Putin has been key to bringing about this latest agreement. The international community must now judge President Putin by his actions and not simply his words, and be ready to increase the pressure further if he refuses to change course.”
