Douglas Alexander comment on the agreement reached at the Paris conference

Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, commenting on the agreement reached at the Paris conference, said:

“The barbaric murder of David Haines underlines the threat that ISIL pose, and their brutal campaign of persecution and terror against civilians cannot be ignored. So I welcome the clear commitments made by the conference participants in Paris to continue the package of international support for Iraq’s democratic government in its efforts to tackle ISIL.

“Labour supports the steps taken so far to assist Iraq’s government in combating this threat, and we welcome the UK Government’s ongoing contribution towards the humanitarian effort in Iraq and the provision of arms and assistance to help Kurdish forces combat ISIL on the frontline.

“A regionally led response to ISIL is vital and the agreement at the Paris conference affirmed the commitment of countries in the region to play an active role in working, with allies, to combat ISIL. The agreement reached to ensure that more is now done to cut off the sources of financing for ISIL, as well as offering more support for the new government in Baghdad, are vital steps forward in the international effort to combat this threat.”
