Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow International Development Secretary, responding to the International Development Committee Report: ‘Recovery and development in Sierra Leone and Liberia’, said:
“Ending the Ebola crisis must be an immediate priority for the international community, and it’s vital that today’s conference is a success.
“This extremely worrying report shows that ending this crisis and preventing the next one means learning the lessons of why and how this epidemic has grown out of control. It raises serious questions about DFID investment and some of its questionable allocation of funds.
"This report makes clear that the only way to beat epidemics like these is through health services equipped to fight back – but in Sierra Leone and Liberia systems are dangerously under resourced. That’s why the international community must develop a serious long term plan to put universal health coverage at the heart of global development policy.”
