Emily Thornberry MP, Labour’s Shadow Attorney General, responding to legal opinion from QCs on Tory human rights proposals, said:
“This legal opinion from eminent QCs makes it plain that Cameron’s plans to tear up human rights laws are ‘wholly unworkable, legally contradictory and inherently inconsistent’. We’ve seen no legal opinion in support of the Tory proposals, just a lot of assertions.
“The opinion makes it clear that the Tory plans are not compatible with remaining within the European Convention on Human Rights, which was part of the legacy left to this nation and the world by Winston Churchill. The Tories have said that they don’t want to withdraw from the Convention. If that’s what they truly want, then they should withdraw these proposals.”
