Chris Leslie, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, following Nick Clegg’s pledge that National Insurance will be the next tax to be cut, said:

“After breaking his promise not to raise VAT nobody will trust a word Nick Clegg says.

"He still can’t tell people how he will pay for his promise on the personal allowance let alone his latest unfunded promise. These pledges will cost billions of pounds, so will he pay for them by raising VAT on families and pensioners again?

"People will judge the Lib Dems on their record in government. They put up VAT and cut tax credits for working families while backing a huge Tory tax cut for millionaires.”
