Sadiq Khan comment ahead of the debate on constitutional change

Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, speaking ahead of the debate on constitutional change, said:

“The English do need to have their voices heard, which is why we have put English devolution at the heart of our policy review. While we have plans to devolve millions of pounds to empower our great cities and regions the Tories have held up English devolution for four years.

“On the specifics of English MPs, the devolved settlement has always thrown up anomalies in Westminster. The question of how to ensure an ‘English voice’ in our legislative process is definitely one of them and it’s right we examine greater powers for English MPs to scrutinise legislation.

“But this must be part of a much wider, deeper reform to the way power is distributed in our country and can’t be a short term, Westminster stitch-up. We need a full Constitutional Convention where the people are given the loudest voice, not a Tory Cabinet Committee meeting behind closed doors, doing deals for party political advantage and ignoring what’s right for the country.”
